The Best Book On The Why & How of Open Relationships & Polyamory
Much is written about open relationships, ethical non-monogamy, polyamory and all the possible relationship models that don't fit the monogamy mould. But one stands out the most as what I'd call the Bible of Ethical non-monogamy.
I recommend this book to all folks who wish to explore opening their relationships or officially becoming ethically non-monogamous, approaching new relationships with openness about their chosen relationship model.
Drum roll...
My favourite and most recommended book on the topic is: ''The Ethical Slut'' it is a book that explores the world of consensual non-monogamy and ethical hedonism. Written by Dossie Easton and Janet Hardy (who I had the pleasure to meet back in 2018 in London), it is a comprehensive guide for those interested in exploring alternative forms of relationships and sexuality.
The book begins by defining the concept of ethical slut, which is someone who is open and honest about their sexual desires and experiences, and who is committed to treating all partners with respect and compassion. The authors argue that non-monogamous relationships can be just as fulfilling and healthy as monogamous ones, and that being open and honest about one's desires can lead to greater intimacy and connection with others.
The book delves into the practical aspects of ethical non-monogamy, including how to communicate with partners, how to navigate jealousy and other difficult emotions, and how to create and maintain healthy boundaries. The authors provide a wealth of practical advice and real-life examples to help readers navigate the complexities of ethical non-monogamy.
One of the most valuable aspects of the book is its emphasis on consent and communication. The authors stress the importance of clear and open communication in any relationship, and they provide a variety of tools and strategies for effective communication with partners. They also explore the importance of informed consent and the need to respect and honour the boundaries of all partners.
The book also touches on the topic of polyamory, which is the practice of having multiple romantic and/or sexual partners at the same time. The authors provide a nuanced and thoughtful discussion of polyamory, highlighting both the potential benefits and the potential challenges of this type of relationship. They also discuss the importance of honesty, openness, and transparency in polyamorous relationships, and they provide a variety of tips and strategies for creating and maintaining healthy polyamorous relationships.
The Ethical Slut is a valuable resource for anyone interested in exploring alternative forms of relationships and sexuality. It is well-written, thoughtful, and informative, and it provides a wealth of practical advice and real-life examples. While the book is primarily aimed at those interested in ethical non-monogamy, it is also useful for anyone interested in developing healthier and more fulfilling relationships in general.
Overall, The Ethical Slut is a highly recommended book for anyone interested in exploring the world of ethical non-monogamy and polyamory. It's an informative and comprehensive guide, with a wealth of practical advice, real-life examples, and thoughtful insights that will be of great benefit to anyone looking to explore alternative forms of relationships and sexuality.
However, it is one thing to read about how to pilot a plane and it's a whole other thing to try to pilot a plane in practice. Hence, if you're looking to open your relationship or wish to adopt the mindset and the lifestyle - seek professional help to guide and support you, as the stakes are high and broken hearts and emotional mayhem are no fun plane crash of an emotional experience to deal with.
